2009 Annual Meeting & Expo Highlights

8/18: 11:00 p.m. Thank you and safe travels
Whether you were participating here with us in Toronto or following along online, thank you for joining us for the 2009 Annual Meeting and Exposition. We look forward to seeing you next year in LA. For those traveling from Toronto, we wish you safe travels.

Tuesday Recap
Tuesday was another full day of learning and excitement. Thought leader Clay Shirky not only had a great session on member value, he also spent some time in our Online Engagement Lounge hosting an informal question and answer session. Fareed Zakaria, today's general session speaker, helped us contextualize what's next in the global landscape. Of course, the meeting came to a close with a great evening party on Polson Pier. We have plenty of photos on Flickr and don't forget you can add your own. Also in the online spaces, Acronym shares some ideas for 2010 and the Hub had a lot of activity including highlights from attendees as they live tweeted several sessions.

8/18: 7:30 a.m. Tuesday's Schedule at a Glance
The conference is coming to an end, but there are lots of great things happening today before you go home. The morning kicks-off with Thought Leaders Major General Lewis MacKenzie speaking on leadership; and Clay Shirky, speaking about providing value using membership dues. Clay will be available for book signing directly after his session. He will also be making a short appearance in the Online Engagement Lounge from 11:00-12:15. View full schedule at a glance.

Other highlights include:

  • Fareed Zakaria, Newsweek editor and columnist and host of a weekly foreign affairs program on CNN is our Closing General Session speaker and will be discussing Politics and Culture of the Changing Global Landscape. 2:30 p.m. Fareed will be available for book signing immediately following the General Session.
  • Robert Kuttner, a leading political eonomist and afternoon Thought Leader will lead a session on the Global Economy, and the changes ahead. Robert will be available for book signing immediately following the session.
  • Tim Burress, author of The Hamster Revolution and afternoon Thought Leader will lead a session on how to overcome email overload. Tim will be available for book signing immediately following the session.
  • Francie Dalton, author of Versatility will be holding a book chat from 8:00-8:30 a.m in the bookstore.
  • New C-level Session! Motiviating the Unmotivated will be from 12:00-12:30 p.m. in room 802A.

8/17: 11:00 p.m. Monday's Wrap-up
Lot's of connecting, learning, and business solutions happened throughout the convention center today. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the Annual Hub, asae09.org, to see what attendees are saying and get the best tidbits from the education sessions. There is also an interesting discussion about the education sessions taking place on Acronym.

  • Charlene Li kicked off the morning General Session with a presentation about engaging community. Read this review.
  • Super chef Anna Olson demonstrated her techniques in the Expo Hall and did a short interview about her favorites.
  • A fabulous Food & Wine Classic was over the top! Ice sculptures, live music on three stages, unbelievable food and a perfect night to be out under the stars. Lots of pics have been added to the flickr pool: http://bit.ly/H7ucn

8/17: 7:30 a.m. Monday's Schedule at a Glance
It's going to be another full and exciting day in Toronto! Charlene Li is today's General Session speaker and will be sharing tips on how to tap into the power of social media to reach your members. We'll have short clips from her after the conference so stay tuned! And, tonight is ASAE & The Center's Food & Wine Classic in the Historic Distillery District - the perfect chance to network and make connections while supporting the Annual Fund for Research & Innovation.

8/16: 10:30 p.m. Sunday's Wrap-up
What a day! The Opening General Session kicked off the conference with an original song performed by association executives from around the US. The Annual Hub was buzzing during the Thought Leader and Learning Labs, lots of great tips and thoughts can be found there. The Expo came alive yesterday with belly dancers, a build-a-bear, Scrabble, and many other original ideas to help entice attendees to engage with particular booths.

A few brave souls share what they have learned so far this Annual:

  • Chris Bucchere, CEO & president of Social Collective shares take-aways from his session, Business of Meetings: Implications and Strategies for Meetings for the Future. Watch now.
  • Eric Saperston, one of the Thought Leader Session Leaders, talks about his amazing road trip, and the lessons he learned on the way: self reliance and self expression.

8/16 2:00 p.m. Video from Opening General Session
It's here!  The Connect With Me song and video from the General Session is now available. ASAE & The Center members share their musical talent with an original song about Connecting at the Annual Meeting in Toronto 2009.  Watch the video to see the amazing musical talent of your association colleagues.

8/16: 12:00 p.m. Expo Helper App Info
Due to a delay with the Apple istore, we have released a mobile web version of the Expo Helper that will help you find booths to visit in the Expo Hall. Check it out. We've also added quick links at the top right of this page to help you get to the Expo Helper, Annual Hub and the Engage page. 

8/16: More Ways to Get Into the Now
This year in addition to having the Daily Now in your hotel and at the Convention Center, you can also read it online. We have an interactive high bandwidth version as well as an HTML version. Take a look.

8/16: Sunday's Schedule at a Glance
The first full day of the conference gets underway early this morning with the CAE Breakfast at 7:00 a.m. to recognize new CAEs. Other highlights for the day include Gary Hamel speaking at the Opening General Session, the first round of Thought Leaders and Learning Labs, the unveiling of the Expo Hall, and of course many section receptions this evening. View today's full schedule at a glance.

8/15: Saturday's Wrap-up
A full and busy day for many volunteer leaders and AMC program participants. After productive meetings and a day of learning they joined those attendees who had just arrived at The Opening Reception. Thrown by Toronto the evening was a hit, complete with fabulous seafood and Canada's famous Four Tenors making a surprise appearance on stage. The evening was capped off with some indoor fireworks!  Also, be sure to check out the short videos from the incoming chairs of themeetings & expositionscommunicationsmembership, and diversity councils to hear what's in store for the upcoming year.

8/15: Welcome to the 2009 Annual Meeting and Exposition
Whether you're participating with us on site here in Toronto or will be following along with us online, we promise to bring you highlights from the meeting as they happen and help keep you up-to-date. 8/15: Expo Helper Website Launched
As an update from yesterday's message about the Expo Helper iPhone app, we have released a mobile web version of the Expo Helper that will help you find those booths you want to be sure to visiti in the Expo Hall from the palm of your hand. Check it out. We've also added quick links at the top right of this page to help you get to the Expo Helper, Annual Hub and the Engage page. 
 
8/14: Annual Golf Tournament Winners Announced
Drew Smith, CPA and John Wooldridge, CPA of LarsonAllen LLP; Tom Harlow, CAE, CPA of American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery; and Andy Briscoe, CAE of The Sugar Association are the winners of the Annual Golf Challenge - congratulations!

8/14: iPhone Apps Not Yet Released
Update for all who are waiting on the iPhone Apps (Expo Helper and Member to Member): the request has been submitted to the iStore but has not yet been released. As soon as they are available we will make an announcement here and via Twitter (which will pull through to the Hub). 

8/12: Get All Your Social Media in One Place
The Hub at asae09.org is a mobile tool (also accessible from your computer) which aggregates members’ comments from existing social web tools into one convenient place you can access anywhere. The Hub pulls content from Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, SlideShare, the Daily Now, and even our Engage Your Career Video Blog. Check it out today!

8/10: Meet your Annual Twitter and Acronym bloggers!
To help you get the most out of your Annual Meeting experience, four staff members will be Twittering the latest updates throughout the conference. In addition, there is a great roundup of members who will be blogging about their experience. Meet them all now!
