Make a Difference in Nashville! Feed the Mind Through ‘Reach Out and Read’

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a program that promotes early literacy by bringing new books and advice about the importance of reading aloud into the pediatric exam room. This national program has more than 2,000 sites throughout the country, with locations in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
Doctors and nurses give new books to children at each well child visit from six-months-old to five-years-old, and accompany these books with developmentally appropriate advice to parents about reading aloud with their child.  By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, ROR helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for reading. Since 1989, ROR pediatricians have been prescribing books and reading aloud for their young patients, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty

During the annual meeting in Nashville, books will be donated to Jo’s Reach Out and Read Book Club at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. For more information, visit http://www.vanderbiltchildrens.com/interior.php?mid=971
